But first, let’s talk about fatigue. The biggest cause of fatigue is burnt out adrenals. You have two adrenals sitting on top of your kidneys that secrete hormones. One major hormone that is created by the adrenal glands is cortisol, which is triggered when you’re under stress. There are three main sources of stress to your adrenal fatigue:
1. Emotional Stress: Work over-load, financial difficulties, no time for play, relationship/family issues, divorce, death of a loved one, or past traumas.
2. Dietary Stress: blood sugar imbalances caused by eating too much sugary, starchy foods, or skipping meals, can lead to adrenal fatigue as cortisol works in tangent with insulin to control blood sugar levels. Eating foods that you are allergic or sensitive too, will also cause stress on the adrenals. Caffeine is also a major source stressor – each time you consume a coffee or an energy drink, you jet cortisol levels up. Over time these stimulants displace cortisol.
3. Pain & Hidden Inflammation: Long-term pain and hidden inflammation depletes cortisol levels. These include ongoing injuries, joint pain, pathogens in the gut, heavy metal toxicity and poor liver functioning.
Too much stress over a period of time, can deplete your cortisol levels, leading to fatigue and a whole host of other symptoms such as depression and anxiety, brain fog, weight gain and muscular skeletal issues. Let’s look at some of these complaints and why you might be experiencing them.
One of the main signs of adrenal fatigue is tiredness. The adrenal glands are responsible for not just dealing with stress, but also for resiliency, energy and endurance. When your adrenals burn-out, your entire body feels it and suffers from extreme exhaustion. Adrenal fatigue occurs in stages. Stage 1 Adrenal Fatigue is when cortisol levels are running very high. You might not feel ‘exhausted’ in this stage, but rather ‘wired’, as your neuroendocrine system is struggling to keep up with the excessive secretion of cortisol. Stage 2 Adrenal Fatigue is when cortisol begins to deplete. This is when fatigue starts to kick in, and you struggle to make it through work without a nap, or multiple cups of coffee. In this Stage, you’re likely waking up unrefreshed, even after a full night’s sleep. Stage 3 Adrenal Fatigue represents extreme fatigue, where you struggle to get out of bed, and feel utterly exhausted all day. In the most serious of cases, you might not even be able to get out of bed for more than a few hours a day.
Depression & Anxiety
One common underlying reason for depression and anxiety is an imbalance of the adrenal stress hormones. When these hormones are depleted due to chronic stress, you become depressed from the physical exhaustion that takes place. Your adrenals also secrete neurotransmitters to your brain to help you cope with stress. When this communication signal is broken-down, it is no wonder you end up with mood imbalances. Up and down moods throughout the day, as well as irritability, often reflect unstable cortisol levels. You may feel “wired and tired” from adrenal exhaustion, and get amped up and even anxious. Yet at the same time, you may also experience burnt-out and down moments throughout the day, as the cortisol levels bounce up and down.
The human brain serves as the control centre of the neuroendocrine system. Subclinical brain dysfunctions can be extremely serious and cause a number of problems in your life. Adrenal fatigue is technically a communication breakdown between the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the adrenals. As the neuroendocrine system is the primary conduit of memory function, adrenal insufficiency can result in brain fog, where you cannot think clearly about everyday matters.
Did you know that stress can make you fat? Cortisol, the main adrenal stress hormone, is a “glucocorticosteroid.” In other words, one of cortisol’s major functions is to work with insulin to keep your blood sugar levels stable. If cortisol is out of balance, your body will store body fat rather than burn fat for fuel easily. When your cortisol is out of balance you have what is called a “damaged metabolism” meaning your normal fat burning mechanism is broken. If you skip a meal, eat too many carbs, eat sweets, consume caffeine, or over eat, your cortisol will be out of balance and you’ll damage your metabolism. If you’re struggling with weight gain, or can’t seem to budge the excess fat, it is very likely that your adrenals are functioning sub-optimally.
Muscular Skeletal Issues
Along with a broken metabolism, your body begins to operate in a catabolic state when you are in Adrenal fatigue. Collagen and protein are broken down in this state for energy, as you no longer can convert your food efficiently into energy. This can lead to muscle soreness, joint pain, and slow recovery from exercise and injury. When you’re chronically stressed, you may literally be eating away at your muscle tissue.
