Well done this weekend to our affiliate cup 2016 team! Special shout outs to Selina, Rene, Jen, Joe, Thomas and Brandon for representing CrossFit Devonport. Thanks go out to our awesome cheer squad and everyone who helped make it happen.
Next up for our little community is the CrossFit Games Open 2016. It starts in late February with the first WOD announced on 25th. For those of you who don’t know, The Open is an annual worldwide event where we can all compete against each other doing the same workout as everyone else. It’s really fun getting about each other and supporting each other.
Some of my favourite memories are of Richard “Salty Dog” Saltmarsh doing burpees over bar and having me and Deano there with him till the end. I remember doing the 2013 Open when the box was nothing more than a stinky warehouse, empty and full of concrete dust. I didn’t submit my scores that year but it was definitely memorable. I remember with solemnity the time I woke up to go do 14.3or so, and hearing that one of our gym members and fellow Open WODDERS had had a brain haemorrhage and was not in a very good way. He sadly passed and it was and still is a very sad and big memory each year of the open.
When this time of year ticks around, I like to think of the sacrifices made, the hardships endured, the sadnesses felt, the friendships made and the support that we each give each other. That’s what I love most about The Open. We realise that each one of us can reach our potential no matter where we are at.
I lay here writing this while little Elsie mumbles gibberish and drools all over my arm and face while contorting herself into positions I have no chance of hitting, and I marvel at her willingness to launch herself into movement. Her eagerness makes me smile and I love her to bits. When did we as a culture lose our confidence to launch ourselves into the unknown. The Open is our time to follow Elsie’s lead and see what happens. We might get stuck on our back doing cute little Elsie wiggles, drool and all haha. Or we might just take out first steps and do something we NEVER thought possible.
The Open is our time to not cover up the past, or to forget it ever happened, or to let what had happened dictate and control our emotions so much that it binds us into inactivity and avoidance.
This year I will give it my all. This year I will put in everything I have because you never know what the future might bring.
PS – this year will mark the third year in a row that I’ve beat Jason Singleton in The Open…giggle 😉
